Apples, Owls and Fairy Doors: local produce and family fun at Greys Court

We love love love Greys Court, our local National Trust property. It's got everything for our family - the most perfect vegetable garden for me, a castle in the trees and mini fort for our little wild one and a house with Swiss connections for the husband. The country walks around the estate are simply stunning, especially at this time of year as the season begins to change and the harvest is in full swing. It is our 'go to' place when we need to get out of the house for a while, burn off some energy and just breathe a bit!

Octavia Hill, one of the founders of the National Trust, said ‘the sight of sky and things growing are fundamental needs, common to all men’ and I couldn't agree more (except I'd add women and children on the end). Greys Court is where we get our nature fix and we always come home happy (despite the odd tantrum when it's time to leave, of course).

How could it get any better than that I hear you say? well, throw in a weekend-long local produce and crafts fair and I'm in total heaven! I managed to have a good look around the stalls laden with lovely local fruit, veg, pickles, jams, honey, wines, meats, cheeses, knit-wear and jewellery - even with the little wild one in tow! This was thanks to the fun and creative crafts activities for kids organised by the Woodland Trust and a really cute trail to discover hidden fairy doors dotted around the grounds. Both kept her very well occupied - I even had a long, grown-up conversation with the deputy head gardener about possibly doing some volunteering (eeek - exciting).

If you are ever any where near Greys Court, please go, you won't be disappointed.

I love local produce

  2. It does look like a fun place to visit and I love the play area. It has much in common with our Fairy garden with the bunting there and tree stumps. Cute owl, well done to the National Trust for making the place so family friendly. I hope the work there comes off for you. Thank you for sharing with me on Country Kids
