Helping me to pick our homegrown fruit and veg, carrying it to the kitchen and cooking with me makes her so much more enthusiastic about eating and we talk about what we did as we enjoy our meal: " I pick pears, Mummy...put in my basket...take in kitchroom...mix mix, sticky fingers...". (yes, she says kitchroom instead of kitchen - makes sense though doesn't it?).
And these moments are forming strong memories for her. Back in June she helped my dad to pick French beans in his garden and forever more they have and will be called Grandad's Beans - even if they come from Tesco! (The picture of her helping Grandad is here).
And here is the end result. Apple, pear and cinnamon oat crumble. It was served with custard, of course:
If it rains again tomorrow we'll put our wellies on and find some puddles to jump in. It's been nice to have a cosy day indoors but I'm pretty sure the novelty will have worn off by tomorrow and we'll be grumpy and climbing the walls without a good dose of fresh air.
Got any good rainy day activities?
Oh that crumble looks divine!!! How wonderful to harvest straight from your garden and make this yumminess! How cute is your little one cooking away with you....you are making memories for her that will last a lifetime! All the best to you friend!! Nicole xo
ReplyDeleteIt was yummy! We ate the whole thing between the three of us! X
DeleteMy parents have a pear tree. So we've enjoyed lots of yummy fresh pears too. My girls love picking them and the ones that go a bit soft get made into muffins mmmmm. Love the "kitchroom" how cute x
ReplyDeleteMuffins - good idea, will give it a try! Always looking for pear recipes at this time of year x
DeleteThere's nothing like picking and eating, or even better picking cooking and eating the fruits of your labour! Lovely memories for you all to look back on and treasure :) #countrykids
ReplyDeleteIt really keeps her interested and engaged. She is no angel sometimes, very strongwilled and has crazy tantrums, but when she is helping me she is as good as gold! These are the moments I'll remember!
DeleteThose are some beautiful photos and the apple and pear crumble sounds scrummy.#BinkyLInky
ReplyDeleteThank you, the camera is quite new so I've been playing around with it a lot lately. The crumble was yum and a really easy one for little hands to help with!
DeleteApart from jumping up and down at muddy-puddles, can't think of any right now! Love that you have fruit-bearing trees! Wish we had a garden like that, ours is just to small. Really enjoyed looking at your photos ;) #countrykids.
ReplyDeleteHello! Thanks for your comment, we have a small garden too! We were lucky that the people here before us had planted a couple of fruit trees, but its just a typical Victorian terrace house with a skinny garden! Here is a post I wrote about what we've done to make it wildlife and child friendly: http://beeandthebluebells.blogspot.co.uk/2014/07/creating-family-friendly-wildlife-garden.html
Deletethat looks like a bumper pear crop this year. I think the warm dry summer and late arrival of winter has been perfect for the autumn fruits. Harvesting from the garden and cooking with the haul is such a lovely way to spend a day. Thank you for sharing with me on Country Kids.
ReplyDeleteThanks, I'm enjoying everybody's posts on Country Kids, see you there next week!
DeleteLove this post. It makes me smile, especially the Kitchroom! I bake with Potato a lot and I have a lot of fun together in the kitchen. I love the look of that crumble. Autumn fruits are so delicious
ReplyDeleteThanks. Autumn is my favourite season by far x
