Harvest Time at Home

Rainy days are here again. Today felt like 'The End of Summer'. So it seemed like a good day to stay home, push on with the potty training (not going well) and nip out to the garden between showers to pick the last of the pears.

We made a yummy apple and pear crumble together, the little wild one standing on her step to reach the table in her Hungry Caterpillar apron and big girl pants. I've only just started to bake with her - I have tried many times in the past but she always seemed intent on eating all the raw ingredients: flour + eggs + toddler's mouth = gluey mess and lots of spluttering. I'm so glad that particular phase is over!

Helping me to pick our homegrown fruit and veg, carrying it to the kitchen and cooking with me makes her so much more enthusiastic about eating and we talk about what we did as we enjoy our meal: " I pick pears, Mummy...put in my basket...take in kitchroom...mix mix, sticky fingers...". (yes, she says kitchroom instead of kitchen - makes sense though doesn't it?).

And these moments are forming strong memories for her. Back in June she helped my dad to pick French beans in his garden and forever more they have and will be called Grandad's Beans - even if they come from Tesco! (The picture of her helping Grandad is here).

And here is the end result. Apple, pear and cinnamon oat crumble. It was served with custard, of course:

If it rains again tomorrow we'll put our wellies on and find some puddles to jump in. It's been nice to have a cosy day indoors but I'm pretty sure the novelty will have worn off by tomorrow and we'll be grumpy and climbing the walls without a good dose of fresh air.

Got any good rainy day activities?

    1. It really keeps her interested and engaged. She is no angel sometimes, very strongwilled and has crazy tantrums, but when she is helping me she is as good as gold! These are the moments I'll remember!

  5. Apart from jumping up and down at muddy-puddles, can't think of any right now! Love that you have fruit-bearing trees! Wish we had a garden like that, ours is just to small. Really enjoyed looking at your photos ;) #countrykids.

    1. Hello! Thanks for your comment, we have a small garden too! We were lucky that the people here before us had planted a couple of fruit trees, but its just a typical Victorian terrace house with a skinny garden! Here is a post I wrote about what we've done to make it wildlife and child friendly: http://beeandthebluebells.blogspot.co.uk/2014/07/creating-family-friendly-wildlife-garden.html

  6. that looks like a bumper pear crop this year. I think the warm dry summer and late arrival of winter has been perfect for the autumn fruits. Harvesting from the garden and cooking with the haul is such a lovely way to spend a day. Thank you for sharing with me on Country Kids.
