Drying Herbs - a new obsession

I'd been meaning to have a go at drying my homegrown herbs for ages, but never quite got round to it, and for some reason I had the impression that it was going to be really complicated. It's not! Now I can't stop. There are currently sprigs of rosemary, sage and oregano hanging from every hook in the house. I'm sure the neighbours must think I'm trying to ward off evil spirits or something with all my neat little bunches hanging from the window frames.

My daughter thinks I'm making her little brooms to sweep the floor with! The rosemary in particular does look like a doll's broom, so I can only admire her imagination.

It is really easy to dry herbs:

Cut some nice healthy handfuls of herbs
Tie them together with string and add a loop to hang the bunch from
Hang them upside down until they go crispy (takes a couple of days)

The only thing to remember is not to put them in a storage jar until completely dry to prevent mould. I read that you can dry herbs in the oven, but that sounds like hard work and I think that slowly air drying might preserve more of the flavour. Plus I like the way the bunches look, hanging in my windows - despite what my neighbours might think of me.

Have a go! Let me know how you get on...

  2. Such a great idea! I tend to freeze herbs, but I love the idea of bunches hanging in the kitchen. Your photos are beautiful!

    1. Thanks! I've got a new camera and not really much of a clue how to use it! Lots of trial and error!
